Scott Gellatly – Strategies for Abstracting the Landscape

Artist Scott Gellatly leads us in this deep dive into his process for using Plein air studies as references to further abstract the imagery in his studio. In this presentation, Scott will give a sampling of the strategies that he incorporates in his ongoing Abstracting the Landscape series of classes with Winslow Art Center.

Paul Bailey – Simplifying the Rural Landscape

Paul recently produced a group of small semi-abstract landscape paintings based on simplifying the rural landscape. In this one-hour presentation, he will demonstrate and explain the techniques behind these paintings- his unique acrylic techniques: paint layering, acrylic washes, masking, collage and more. Paul Bailey will work in acrylics and mixed media.

Zoë Cohen – The Contemporary Sketchbook

A sketchbook is a personal document containing both visual and written material. Through a series of non-intimidating guided exercises, mixed media artist Zoe Cohen will zero in on some of the unconventional methods contemporary artists use to create inspirational sketchbooks- rough, unpretentious drawings, collage, marks and scribbles, as well as some classic sketching practices.

David Sharpe – The Abbreviated Landscape 

Sometimes the abbreviated landscape painting can be more engaging and interesting than a literal interpretation. In this presentation/demo, painter David Sharpe will share the decisions he makes in his painting process, balancing between abstraction and representation, using design shapes in light, to create his emotional works. Michael Weller – Mixed Media Self-Portrait Sketch-Along

Sketch alongside New English Art Club member, artist Michael Weller to discover how he achieves his loose, expressive, mixed-media self-portrait sketches. In Michael’s words, “When I’m feeling glum, I look in the mirror and sketch from life for a while. Join artist Mike Hernandez as he demonstrates a maritime scene painting with this versatile, often overlooked paint. Flashe is an extra-fine vinyl-based paint that dries evenly with intense coverage to a uniform, velvety matte, opaque finish. Highly pigmented, Flashe may be diluted with water to create a range of results, from highly opaque to a transparent watercolor effect.

Mary Pritchard – Painting Grasses in Pastel Demo

Pastel artist Mary Pritchard’s favorite subject matter is within a few miles of her Maryland home, in the small towns, family farms, tidewater rivers and marshes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In this one-hour presentation, Mary will demonstrate how she captures one of these subjects-marsh grasses-in pastel.
