Pattern is ubiquitous as decoration or adornment for clothing, bedding, rugs, dishes, notebooks, and so many other things we use in everyday life. But some patterns are called upon to be images in their own right. A painting using pattern as its predominant format does not adorn something else. It invites you to be drawn into the repeated motif for its own sake.
