Zoë Cohen – Vessels (Online)
Join Winslow Art Center instructor, Zoë Cohen, for a delightful tour of contemporary art featuring the classic, much loved vessel form.
Born in Chicago in 1961, Zoë Cohen was strongly affected by the classic graphic influences of a mid-century urban environment. Everyday exposure to modern architecture, photography, painting, sculpture and minimalist 1960’s design made a deep impression. Zoë’s abstract painting springs from her lifelong fascination with mid-century modern art and design, Abstract Expressionism and The New York School painters. She continues to be inspired by contemporary artists of all kinds. History, art history, social history, illustration, literature, theater, music, dance, photography, and film all inform her work.

Thanks, Zoe, for a wonderfully comprehensive presentation. Lots of inspiration from a humble shape.
Thank you, Zoë! Great slide show as always! As a fellow former kindergarten teacher, I have to say that this reminded me of the children’s book A House is a House for Me. A cup is a vessel for tea! A shoe is a vessel for a foot! I am a vessel for me! Haha! Here’s a little gouache sketch inspired by your presentation.
Awww …. thank you, Roseanne! Always a pleasure to have you along for the ride.
I loved this, Zoe. Thank you, especially because I’m also currently working with vessel shapes and this presentation gave me lots of food for thought and further research. I have a collection of vessels, my own and my mothers, that I will be using for a new series. When my mom was teaching, back in the 40’s and 50’s, she received dozens of tiny vases from students, most from the dime store. Most have disappeared but I still have a few, with tiny paper scraps inside with the name of the student. Such treasures that I’m only now understanding.
What a beautiful story, Jo. That is exactly the kind of meaning I am hoping to garner with an optional writing exercise in my upcoming class. Sweet memories of particular objects. Thx!
Rosemary sketched during your talk. In her sketchbook, graphite. Great presentation.

Thanks Carmela! Glad you enjoyed it.
Inspired by your presentation, my cousin and I set up a still life on the dining room table and painted watercolors together 🙂 Kx
How fun! I love that it inspired a communal painting session – gorgeous grouping! Thanks.
That was a terrific presentation. I love vessels for their symbolism too.
Thank you Martha and Zoe for this!
Loved your slide show and talk Zoë! A great mix of styles and mediums. I’m feeling energized to paint some vessels!

Love it – the drawing alongside the casual notes. … always great to have you with us for these presentations. Thanks for posting!
I have been painting vessels and this presentation has started a fire in my brain! So happy making … almost disturbing.
Always exciting to be in parallel processes with other artists – best of luck with your paintings!
