Michael Weller – Mixed Media Self-Portrait Sketch-Along

Sketch alongside New English Art Club member, artist Michael Weller to discover how he achieves his loose, expressive, mixed-media self-portrait sketches. In Michael’s words, “When I’m feeling glum, I look in the mirror and sketch from life for a while. I don’t have to flatter the sitter or do a lovely drawing.” Sketch along using Bic pens, brush pens, ink, permanent markers, pastels, big chunks of charcoal, kids’ paint sticks…anything goes!

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition.

Fun and scary 😁. Will try more over time. Thanks for an interesting mini workshop!
I didn’t have the right materials to hand, so I worked with what I could reach. I will be continuing to try to simplify shapes, as I have a long way to go in that regard.
