Why Come to Europe with Us?

Our small group travel art workshops offer you the opportunity to experience Europe at its best while studying with award-winning teaching artists!
We select unique and historic venues so you can explore the local culture, take in the stunning surroundings, enjoy, amazing food and wine, and create.
While we guarantee insightful instruction by world class art teachers, our travel workshops are not art “bootcamp” experiences. Private four-star accommodations, always with ensuite bath, are standard, and gatherings and meals take place in delightful gardens, courtyards, terraces and period rooms. We select only locations with courteous, helpful and friendly hotel staff, and my family and I accompany every trip to ensure you have a memorable experience.

Unique Venues

We select historically significant venues tailored to the specific needs of the art instructor and the season of the tour.

Panoramic views, ambiance, quality accommodations and excellent regional cuisine are mandatory criteria.  We strive to seek out unusual and memorable locations not readily discoverable by the casual traveler.

Our venues include a restored 11th century castle, a converted monastery, an 18th century hunting lodge, a 17th century Bishop’s palace and a 400-year-old working manorial farm complete with olive groves, vineyards and grazing sheep.

Access to picturesque villages and historic sites, hiking, biking and horseback riding, fly fishing, falconry demonstrations, cooking and astronomy classes, and even truffle hunting, have all played a part in our selection process.

Our trips begin and end at convenient travel destinations, such as Rome or Venice, so participants can easily build on their adventure before or after the work shop.

Experience Counts

With over 10 years of experience organizing art tours, and with part of our team, my daughters Anne and Amy, living in Europe and fluent in Italian and Spanish, we have the ability not only to maintain long term relationships with the owners and staff of our favorite venues, but to seek out and vet new and unique locations each year.

We personally participate in every travel workshop to ensure the quality of the accommodations and cuisine as well as to coordinate the special needs of the art instruction program.

I had the opportunity to study with Mitch Albala at Castello di Petroia in Gubbio, Italy last August. It is an amazingly beautiful location with a wonderful atmosphere and incredible food. I have been on many painting workshops, but never have I felt so welcomed and connected to the staff and to the other workshop painters. Martha does an amazing job of making sure you have everything you need for a successful experience. In fact I loved it so much that I’ve already signed up for another travel workshop with Winslow Art Center in Italy in September. I think they may have spoiled me for workshops with other organizations…

As a newcomer to painting I was seeking out a unique opportunity to take an immersive dive over an extended two weeks in an international program with multiple instructors where I knew the quality of workshops would equally match the quality of the surroundings and accommodations at a 5 star level.  Only Winslow Art Center's Italian Landscape program at the incomparable Castello di Petroia in Umbria could meet those expectations. From the genuine hospitality shown by Martha and her staff to the extraordinary instruction from both Mitch Albala and Bernard Dellario, the comradery of making new friends, the exquisite meals and wine tastings of the region, I knew this trip had become an investment into my own future. Simply put, one instructor taught me the process of plein air while sitting amongst the olive trees, and another taught me to think like an artist while gazing at sunlight across the morning dew.  Together they could not have given me a better start on a new journey where the possibilities were endless!

Looking back over 2023, the time we spent at Castle Petroia “Tops the List”! Because of your warm welcome, we immediately felt at home in the 13th century castle and felt a part of a like-minded group of artists and art lovers. Bernie Dellario was both accomplished and patient and helped my artistic challenge of GOUACHE!! Joe, my art loving husband and foodie, was totally relaxed and content after a week in the castle setting. Thank you, Martha, and Chip for offering this opportunity! It’s the perfect vacation for artists who love to travel and follow their passion! AND we would love to go again!!!

Castello di Petroia, between Gubbio and Perugia, Italy

Castello di Petroia
The 10th Century Castello di Petroia is an authentic medieval fortress perched on a hilltop between the towns of Perugia and Gubbio, with inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. The castle, birthplace of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (b.1422), is surrounded by a 600-acre traditional Umbrian farm with beautiful olive groves, hiking and horse-riding trails, meadows, woods and abundant wildlife.

The castle’s 16 bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom, feature original wooden beams, stone arches, antique furniture and painted ceilings. The luxurious accommodations have been restored with an eye to modern amenities, while preserving the authentic medieval structure. The 13th Century dining room is warm and refined, with historic furnishings, soft light, fireplaces and candles. Breakfasts, which include homemade yogurts, breads, pastries, jams, fresh fruit and local meats and cheeses, are served in the historic Guidobaldo Hall, an elegant book-lined, wood-beamed room with magnificent views of the Umbrian countryside.

New in 2025! Hydroussa Hotel, Island of Hydra, Greece

The Greek island of Hydra is a mountainous island located off the coast of the Peloponnese in the Saronic Gulf.  Although less than a two-hour ferry ride from Athens/Piraeus, Hydra is a long step back in time. The inhabitants of Hydra elected over 60 years ago to preserve the character and architecture of the island by banning wheeled vehicles including cars and motorbikes, as well as new construction, permitting only restoration of older buildings. The result is an island of largely 18th and 19th century architecture that travels at the pace of donkeys, the only means of transportation available other than by boat.

The port of Hydra, where our venue is located, is considered one of the most picturesque in Greece, a keyhole harbor ringed by waterfront cafes with the town rising steeply behind. Our hotel, the Hydroussa, located on a winding street set back from the hubbub of the port, is a striking example of Hydriot architectural style, a large mansion with soaring ceilings built around a central courtyard shaded by lemon trees where breakfast and evening aperitivos are served.

Palazzo Leti, Spoleto, Italy

Palazzo Leti, the fourteenth century home of the noble Leti family, consists of twelve beautifully restored rooms, each looking across the valley towards Monteluco.  Situated in the center of Spoleto, one of the lesser-known jewels of Umbria, the town is an important center for the arts with numerous museums and galleries as well as historic sites including the Roman theater, the Ponte delle Torri aqueduct , the Santa Maria Assunta cathedral, all dominated by the imposing medieval Castello Rocca Albornoziana.

Of particular note to plein air artists, many of the town’s principal piazzas and sites have recently been connected by underground escalators, eliminating the need to carry painting gear up and down the hilly cobblestone streets.

Although worthy of many days of exploration in its own right, Spoleto’s strategic location at the head of a broad valley in the foot hills of the Apennines provides easy access to some of the best known towns in Italy including Assisi, Trevi, Terni, Perugia and Bevagna.  With plenty to do for non-painters as well, the Spoleto-Norcia narrow grade railway bed has been converted to a bike path with spectacular views of the nearby Nera Valley, which is also one of Italy’s best known fly fishing rivers.

Angelo d'Oro, Rovinj, Croatia

Angelo d’Oro is a beautifully converted 17th Century Bishop’s Palace, a Croatian historic preservation site located in the heart of Rovinj’s old town.  Built around a charming interior garden where breakfast and evening drinks are served, the three-story site offers elegant accommodations in 21 rooms on three floors. Interior art workshop space is available in a vaulted room on the first floor.

The town of Rovinj, the jewel of the Istrian Peninsula, is heavily influenced by Italian architecture and culture, and indeed formed part of Italy until recently.  Surrounded on three sides by water, medieval and renaissance Rovinj consists of a warren of cobble stone streets, tunnels and stairways, the entire town banned to car traffic.  Waterfront restaurants, shops, cafes and a vibrant marketplace are all within steps of our venue.  At the top of the town is a cathedral, surrounded by a park with dramatic views of the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

In addition to workshops led by nationally acclaimed instructors, and a day excursion arranged by Winslow Art Center, participants, and their non-painting companions, will have access to beaches, boat excursions, bike rental and an extensive public park created in the late 19th Century when Istria was still under Austrian rule.

The pick-up and drop-off point for those traveling to Rovinj by transportation arranged by Winslow Art Center is in the city of Trieste, Italy.
