Join renowned Pacific Northwest mixed media artist Larry Calkins for an intimate look into the personal history, imagery, and narrative threads that shape his distinctive body of work. Born in a small logging town in Oregon, Larry draws deeply from memory, place, and a connection to the past—creating art that is both raw and deeply resonant.
Though primitive in aesthetic, his mixed media pieces are layered with meaning and emotional complexity. With recurring motifs rooted in childhood, folklore, and dreamlike symbolism, Larry’s work evokes a world that is both haunting and tender. This class offers a rare opportunity to explore how memory, materials, and imagination come together to build powerful visual stories.

Larry Calkins was born in 1955 in Corvallis, OR, and grew up in a small logging community named Harlan. He stepped into the family tradition of working within logging operations, but after serious injuries in logging accidents, he decided to pursue a career in the arts. He has lived in London, England, and has traveled widely throughout the US and Europe. Larry is a very prolific artist and has created a vast body of work, that has been shown in many galleries since 1994. Calkins has been Artist in Residence at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA and has taught workshops and classes for many years in the Seattle area.
