Dates: May 29-June 5, 2025
Instructor: Sarah B. Hansen

Supply List

With an emphasis on landscape, find yourself painting cobblestone streets, stairways, the astoundingly blue Adriatic Sea, tranquil park settings, and small vignettes of daily Croatian life.  Learn to capture the essence of your subject by simplifying forms using values groups, limited color palettes, and interesting edge variations. Lessons will include composition arrangement, form simplification, value grouping, pigment selection, water to paint ratio, and expressionistic paint application. Each day will include lectures, demonstrations, group painting, and personal instruction from Sarah, a highly sought-after, generous, and hands-on instructor. During your stay, a combination of plein and studio work is planned. Some degree of prior watercolor and drawing experience is helpful for this class.

Draw and paint directly from surroundings, and your own references. Demos done principally in watercolor and but also gouache. Some experience in painting and drawing is helpful.

About the Instructor

Award-winning Northwest Watercolor Society Signature member, artist, and instructor, Sarah B. Hansen has been painting for over 30 years. A self-taught painter, Sarah began by painting traditional transparent watercolor on paper, primarily portraits. By recently converting into a landscape artist, Sarah has found in the combination of her love of nature and gestural paint application, an open door into limitless possibilities of expression. Born and raised in Southwestern Colorado, Sarah moved to Oregon in 1987, working as a commercial and residential designer in Portland. Now, Sarah can be found creating acrylic and watercolor landscapes from her studio in Bend, Oregon. Her collectors range regionally and worldwide, both in residential and public sites. She teaches workshops both in the U.S. and abroad and is a member of American Women Artists, NWWS and Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Artists.

Luxury Accomodations at Angelo d'Oro, Rovinj, Croatia

Rovinj, Croatia

Angelo d’Oro is a beautifully converted 17th Century Bishop’s Palace, a Croatian historic preservation site located in the heart of Rovinj’s old town.  Built around a charming interior garden where breakfast and evening drinks are served, the three-story site offers elegant accommodations in 21 rooms on three floors. Interior art workshop space is available in a vaulted room on the first floor.

The town of Rovinj, the jewel of the Istrian Peninsula, is heavily influenced by Italian architecture and culture, and indeed formed part of Italy until recently.  Surrounded on three sides by water, medieval and renaissance Rovinj consists of a warren of cobble stone streets, tunnels and stairways, the entire town banned to car traffic.  Waterfront restaurants, shops, cafes and a vibrant marketplace are all within steps of our venue.  At the top of the town is a cathedral, surrounded by a park with dramatic views of the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

In addition to workshops led by nationally acclaimed instructors, and a day excursion arranged by Winslow Art Center, participants, and their non-painting companions, will have access to beaches, boat excursions, bike rental and an extensive public park created in the late 19th Century when Istria was still under Austrian rule.

The pick-up and drop-off point for those traveling to Rovinj by transportation arranged by Winslow Art Center is nearby and convenient to Venice, its international airport and train station so that those who wish may visit this fascinating city before or after the workshop.  This should be a memorable experience.
