In-Depth Painting Retreat in Rome

with Ingrid Christensen - February 4-13, 2027

Dates: February 4-13, 2027
Instructor: Ingrid Christensen
Venue: Anthea Studio, Prati District, Rome
Medium: Open to all mediums
Level: Open to all levels of experience (Experience with medium of choice recommended)

This retreat is for artists who thrive in the focused calm of studio work but who are drawn to the energy of new places. If you want a dedicated painting space and the inspiration of one of the world’s great cities, this retreat is for you. The goal is to become intentional and decisive in every aspect of picture making. From setting up still lifes to painting a clothed model in the studio, we will focus on designing a satisfying arrangement of shapes, choosing a colour and value scheme, and applying paint with boldness and variety. Edges, level of finish, colour saturation, paint consistency: all are tools that define our works as unique to ourselves. You will experiment with each element to deepen your understanding of your individual aesthetic. The more you know about what you like in your work, the more your work will become a visible expression of how you experience the world. You’ll also explore a variety of limited palettes to discover how they can be used to personalize your paintings. Throughout the workshop, we’ll work on creating accurate proportion, form, and a sense of immediacy. This will not be one-size-fits-all instruction – you’ll learn to achieve the degree of looseness or finish that feels right for you. Each day will begin with a full-group demo and continue to individual instruction and mini demos as your paintings develop.

Working alongside a small group of painters from around the world – sharing ideas, food, wine and laughs – will be an an opportunity for new friendships and lasting connections.

Cultural Inspiration: Rome’s museums, galleries, and streets, largely tourist free at this time of year, are yours to explore. The city will feed our eyes and deepen our studio work.

Materials: Oil, acrylic, and gouache paint as well as easels and painting supports are all provided. I recommend that you work in the medium that’s most comfortable for you but you’re welcome to try the others or simply feel free to explore. Bring your own brushes and your spirit of adventure!

Anthea Studio, Trionfale, Rome

Our Painting Venue

Although the Anthea Studio is within sight of the Vatican walls, the location allows you to experience the real “undiscovered” Rome with quiet, residential streets interspersed with bustling shopping and restaurant areas. The studio, historically a flower arranging studio, consists of an attractive, well lit, vaulted ceiling space equipped with WiFi, utility sink and bathroom facilities. Easels, solvents, oil and gouache paints will be provided so there is no need to bring anything but your talent and interest.*

Dozens of restaurants, cafes and pastry shops are within a five minute walk from the studio and the famous Mercato Trionfale, the largest open-stall market in Rome, is practically across the street. Consisting of hundreds of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, spices, eggs, pastries and flowers, we will visit the market frequently to seek still-life subject matter and inspiration.

*Artists working in other mediums will supply their own paints. Rome, of course, has excellent art supply stores.

Accommodations

Unlike our typical travel workshops, Winslow Art Center has not arranged accommodations for this trip. With all of Rome to choose from, participants will select from the city’s many hotels and AirBnbs to fit their budget and preference.

Rome’s centro storico is surprisingly contained – you can walk from almost any point to another within an hour. Accommodations anywhere in the core city will be within minutes by taxi from the Anthea studio. For those wishing to be within walking distance, the many quaint hotels and AirBnbs in the nearby Borgo Pio district are about a 10-minute walk away. Accommodations close to the Tiber or on the south side of the Trastevere will be within a pleasant 20 to 30-minute walk. The subway and city buses provide other options. Offered in the off-season, accommodations should be plentiful and reasonably priced.
