Painting Rome: Memory, Mood & Imagination

with Patrick Lee - January 25-February 3, 2027

An immersive exploration of observation, memory, and imagination through painting in Rome.

Dates: January 25-February 3, 2027
Instructor: Patrick Lee
Venue: Anthea Studio, Prati District, Rome
Medium: All – Patrick will work in oil
Level: Open to all levels of experience (Experience with medium of choice recommended)

Patrick Lee’s approach to painting balances direct observation with intuition, memory, and imagination. Whether working in the studio or on location, he uses drawing, color, and shifting spatial relationships to move beyond literal representation, creating evocative paintings that capture atmosphere, emotion, and a sense of place. Rather than focusing on explicit detail, his work invites viewers to make their own personal connections with each image.

Set in the inspiring surroundings of Rome, this immersive 10-day workshop will draw inspiration from the city’s streets, architecture, museums, and remarkable artistic heritage. Through museum visits, on-location sketching, and studio painting, students will explore how observation, memory, and imagination work together to create expressive paintings. Patrick will guide participants in using composition, light, color, and design to convey mood while developing paintings that reflect not only what they see, but what they experience and remember.

About Patrick Lee

Patrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections.

Anthea Studio, Trionfale, Rome

Our Painting Venue

Although the Anthea Studio is within sight of the Vatican walls, the location allows you to experience the real “undiscovered” Rome with quiet, residential streets interspersed with bustling shopping and restaurant areas. The studio, historically a flower arranging studio, consists of an attractive, well lit, vaulted ceiling space equipped with WiFi, utility sink and bathroom facilities. Easels, solvents, oil and gouache paints will be provided so there is no need to bring anything but your talent and interest.*

Dozens of restaurants, cafes and pastry shops are within a five minute walk from the studio and the famous Mercato Trionfale, the largest open-stall market in Rome, is practically across the street. Consisting of hundreds of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, spices, eggs, pastries and flowers, we will visit the market frequently to seek still-life subject matter and inspiration.

*Artists working in other mediums will supply their own paints. Rome, of course, has excellent art supply stores.

Accommodations

Unlike our typical travel workshops, Winslow Art Center has not arranged accommodations for this trip. With all of Rome to choose from, participants will select from the city’s many hotels and AirBnbs to fit their budget and preference.

Rome’s centro storico is surprisingly contained – you can walk from almost any point to another within an hour. Accommodations anywhere in the core city will be within minutes by taxi from the Anthea studio. For those wishing to be within walking distance, the many quaint hotels and AirBnbs in the nearby Borgo Pio district are about a 10-minute walk away. Accommodations close to the Tiber or on the south side of the Trastevere will be within a pleasant 20 to 30-minute walk. The subway and city buses provide other options. Offered in the off-season, accommodations should be plentiful and reasonably priced.
