Light and Atmosphere: Capturing the Adriatic Seaside

with Anne Wolfer - September 25-October 2, 2026

Dates: September 25-October 2, 2026
Instructor: Anne Wolfer
Venue: Palazzo Angelo d’Oro, Rovinj, Croatia
Medium: Open to all mediums – Anne will work in oil
Level: Open to all levels of experience

Supply List

This plein air course will capture the light and atmosphere of the charming seaside town of Rovinj in a contemporary style. Covering essential fundamentals, the course will also explore ways to disrupt the painted surface as a means of abstracting elements within our compositions. Topics will include creating a strong composition, drawing accurately from observation, mixing and matching color effectively, and developing confident color relationships.

Each day will begin with a demonstration and group discussion to guide participants’ day’s work. Topics will include working quickly and accurately, creating a strong focal point, and learning what to leave in, and out, to strengthen paintings. Class days will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions at locations within the town and surrounding waterfront. Anne will circulate among participants to provide one-on-one instruction with the goal of students completing two landscape paintings per day. The day will conclude with a short critique of all work.

Although Anne will be working in oil, the course is designed to be relevant to all levels and mediums.

About Anne Wolfer

Art has been a guiding constant for Anne Wolfer since childhood. Born in Salt Lake City and raised in coastal Connecticut, Anne has always found solace in nature. Whether hiking or sailing on Long Island Sound, she has long been captivated by the shifting light and color of the outdoors.

Anne earned her BA from the University of Utah before spending a decade in San Francisco working in educational publishing, all while maintaining a dedicated artistic practice. Living abroad in Vienna and Munich, surrounded by centuries of art and architecture, further fueled her artistic growth. Returning to Utah, she studied with several respected professional artists, further developing both her painting and her passion for teaching.

For the past ten years, Anne has been an influential visual arts educator at Rowland Hall, while also teaching private and group lessons in her Salt Lake City studio. Her contemporary painting style strikes a balance between dimensionality and abstraction, and she is known for her expressive use of color, light, and mark-making. Anne’s work is held in private collections across the U.S. and internationally, and she is proudly represented by 15th Street Gallery in Salt Lake City.

Luxury Accomodations at Hotel Angelo d'Oro

Angelo d’Oro

Angelo d’Oro is a beautifully converted 17th Century Bishop’s Palace, a Croatian historic preservation site located in the heart of Rovinj’s old town.  Built around a charming interior garden where breakfast and evening drinks are served, the three-story site offers elegant accommodations in 21 rooms on three floors. Interior art workshop space is available in a vaulted room on the first floor.

The town of Rovinj, the jewel of the Istrian Peninsula, is heavily influenced by Italian architecture and culture, and indeed formed part of Italy until recently.  Surrounded on three sides by water, medieval and renaissance Rovinj consists of a warren of cobble stone streets, tunnels and stairways, the entire town banned to car traffic.  Waterfront restaurants, shops, cafes and a vibrant marketplace are all within steps of our venue.  At the top of the town is a cathedral, surrounded by a park with dramatic views of the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

In addition to workshops led by nationally acclaimed instructors, and a day excursion arranged by Winslow Art Center, participants, and their non-painting companions, will have access to beaches, boat excursions, bike rental and an extensive public park created in the late 19th Century when Istria was still under Austrian rule.

The pick-up and drop-off point for those traveling to Rovinj by transportation arranged by Winslow Art Center is in Trieste, a city near and convenient to Venice and other locations.
