This immersive experience goes beyond capturing the picturesque harbor and cobblestone streets. We’ll delve into Hydra’s rich history and artistic legacy, using various mediums to translate its essence onto canvas.
This workshop, led by Bernie Dellario, known for capturing the essence of landscapes with a minimalist approach, focuses on the power of observation and intentional mark-making while using a limited palette and portable supplies. Master the art of expressing Hydra’s unique character with just a few well-chosen tools. Learn to translate the play of light on the village’s colorful doorways, the texture of weathered stone walls, and the vibrant spirit of the island’s residents onto canvas.
From the curious beginner to the seasoned artist seeking a fresh perspective, all skill levels are accepted. Bernie will guide you in honing your minimalist approach, encouraging you to see the essence of Hydra through a simplified lens. Embrace the freedom of a streamlined set-up, allowing you to focus on the essence of your subject. Robust personalized instruction, several live demonstrations and periodic critiques will be provided. All mediums accepted, the instructor will demonstrate mostly in gouache or acrylic.
The Greek island of Hydra is a mountainous island located off the coast of the Peloponnese in the Saronic Gulf. Although less than a two-hour ferry ride from Athens/Piraeus, Hydra is a long step back in time. The inhabitants of Hydra elected over 60 years ago to preserve the character and architecture of the island by banning wheeled vehicles including cars and motorbikes, as well as new construction, permitting only restoration of older buildings. The result is an island of largely 18th and 19th century architecture that travels at the pace of donkeys, the only means of transportation available other than by boat.
The port of Hydra, where our venue is located, is considered one of the most picturesque in Greece, a keyhole harbor ringed by waterfront cafes with the town rising steeply behind. Our hotel, the Hydroussa, located on a winding street set back from the hubbub of the port, is a striking example of Hydriot architectural style, a large mansion with soaring ceilings built around a central courtyard shaded by lemon trees where breakfast and evening aperitivos are served.
