Dates: October 3-10, 2025
Instructor: Jean Mackay
Venue: Castello di Petroia, Gubbio, Umbria, Italy
Medium: Pencil, pen and watercolor
Level: All
Expansive vistas of fields and mountains; a canopy of spreading oaks, ripening olives, pomegranates and grapes; and a medieval castle and working farm are our subjects for the week. Daily instruction in watercolor journaling and painting techniques will focus on building your artistic skills, as well as offer opportunities to practice and gain confidence with Jean’s guidance and support. Working primarily in a sketchbook or journal, we will weave together elements of the natural and cultural heritage of Castello di Petroia to create a log that reflects your experience of this extraordinary place. The group will work together in a supportive environment, and artists at all levels of experience are welcome. Jean will work with you to expand your skills and leave you feeling inspired.
Winslow Art Center will arrange a Zoom meeting for participants with Jean to guide you through topics like class format, paint supplies and how to travel with them and life at the castle. Jean has taught this course many times at the castle and it remains a perennial favorite!
The venue for this week-long art immersion is the 10th Century Castello di Petroia, an authentic medieval fortress perched on a hilltop between the towns of Perugia and Gubbio, with inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. The castle, birthplace of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (b.1422), is surrounded by a 600-acre traditional Umbrian farm with beautiful olive groves, hiking and horse-riding trails, meadows, woods and abundant wildlife.
Martha and the Winslow Art Center team have over 10 years of experience organizing destination art workshops. We personally participate in every travel workshop to ensure the quality of the accommodations and cuisine as well as to coordinate the special needs of the art instruction program.
