Dates: October 5-12, 2024
Instructor: Ingrid Christensen
Location: Castello di Petroia, Gubbio, Italy
Level: All
Mediums: All opaque mediums (oil, acrylic, gouache, pastel) demos will be in oil

Experience a week of painting in Umbria, known as Italy’s “green heart” with Winslow Art Center and award-winning oil painter Ingrid Christensen. Ingrid’s painting method is bold, colorful, and, above all, logical. Revel in the beauty and culture of Italy while learning to apply Ingrid’s principles of shape, color and paint application to create your own confident works.

Building on the theme of her popular 2022 workshop at Castello di Pretoia, the focus of this week-long painting intensive will be to learn to see the essence of your subject, whether a landscape, still life, or a person.  Through daily group and individual demos, discover how to break down the complexity of what you’re seeing into simple shapes and accurate colors and how to apply your paint in wet-in-wet layers without making mud.

Ingrid believes that painting is a joyful, playful pursuit and strives to bring that sense of play to her teaching. In this 5-day Italian painting immersive, expect to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, experience artistic revelations and, regardless of your level,  advance your artistic practice and have lots of fun!  Painting from life with the Castello di Petroia and its 500-acre surrounding estate as your backdrop, your subjects will be still life, landscape, and the figure. This workshop is suitable for painters working in opaque mediums.  Ingrid’s demos will be in oil.

Luxury Accomodations at Castello di Petroia

The venue for this week-long art immersion is the 10th Century Castello di Petroia, an authentic medieval fortress perched on a hilltop between the towns of Perugia and Gubbio, with inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. The castle, birthplace of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (b.1422), is surrounded by a 600-acre traditional Umbrian farm with beautiful olive groves, hiking and horse-riding trails, meadows, woods and abundant wildlife.

The castle’s 16 bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom, feature original wooden beams, stone arches, antique furniture and painted ceilings. The luxurious accommodations have been restored with an eye to modern amenities, while preserving the authentic medieval structure. The 13th Century dining room is warm and refined, with historic furnishings, soft light, fireplaces and candles. Breakfasts, which include homemade yogurts, breads, pastries, jams, fresh fruit and local meats and cheeses, are served in the historic Guidobaldo Hall, an elegant book-lined, wood-beamed room with magnificent views of the Umbrian countryside.
