This workshop explores a layered approach to painting that begins with soft pastel and drawing marks and evolves through oil paint and cold wax. Artists will learn how to build depth through layering, scraping, and excavation, allowing earlier passages of color and mark making to remain part of the final surface.
Working on oil paper or panels, participants will explore pastel underpainting, sealing layers with cold wax, mixing oil paint with wax medium, and developing richly textured surfaces. Demonstrations will focus on layering techniques, pigment stick mark making, and balancing transparency and opacity in the painting.
This workshop encourages an intuitive process where paintings develop through discovery, response, and the gradual building of surface history.
Suitable for artists working in pastel, oil, acrylic, or mixed media who are interested in exploring layered painting processes.
