Artist Scott Gellatly leads us in this deep dive into his process for using Plein air studies as references to further abstract the imagery in his studio. Artist Scott Gellatly leads us in this deep dive into his process for using Plein air studies as references to further abstract the imagery in his studio. About the Instructor:
Scott Gellatly holds a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Oregon and has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. A landscape painter at heart, Scott’s work has become more abstracted, with greater emphasis on pure color and gestural mark-making to evoke nature. Scott is an Oregon native and lives in Portland with his family.

  1. Well, I didn’t have casein or oil paints so I decided to see what I could do with what I had on hand, toned pastel paper and watercolor. I know that the process is reverse for reserving whites and going from lightest to darkest in watercolor, but I just added some white gouache at the end. It is a bit muddy, but I would like to try again now that I understand the thinking process and just going with it without the notan or reference.
