Medium: All – demo will be in gouache
Students will learn to capture the beauty, sparkle and majesty of the night sky. Mike Hernandez will demonstrate his techniques and principles of color harmonizing, stylization, high key lighting and setting the right mood through researching the right reference material and inspiration. Mike will demo his painting process using gouache.
A native Angeleno, Mike Hernandez is a plein air painter skilled in gouache, oil and acrylic, who’s works have been featured in several on-line publications as well as galleries. His process began as a young child, painting still life images. Influenced by the likes of Edgar Payne, Sorolla and Franz Bischoff, Mike soon explored the foundations of color and light in the outdoors – striving to find the beauty in the ordinary. With a palette that resides at the crossroads between industrial and landscapes, he finds inspiration anywhere from the Eastern Sierra range to the muddy concrete banks of the Los Angeles River. Mike studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, graduating with a B.A. in 1998. Currently he is a Production Designer at Dreamworks Animation as well as a nation-wide sought-after workshop instructor. His works can be found in several private collections around the world.

About Our Past Technique Takeaways:
Discover specific art techniques that you can ‘take away’ from some of your favorite artists and apply to your own work. This one-and-a-half hour recorded presentation will showcase a process that the artist incorporates in their daily art practice. Instruction will be through a combination of lecture and demonstration.
You’ll be able to watch the class recording as many times as you would like for two months (for example, for a purchase on March 4th at noon, the recording would be available until May 4th at noon). There are no ongoing charges.
