Leigh Culver – Create Striking Landscapes with Foreground Interrupters (Online Class Recording)

Date recorded: Friday, August 11, 2023
Medium: All

How can you make your landscapes look distinctive and less predictable in the flood of images saturating the art market?  Consider the compositional strategy of many successful artists from the past:  use what I call “landscape interrupters.”

In this presentation, we’ll explore examples by Paul Cezanne, Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Jane Freilicher, as well as artists from the Canadian Group of Seven and others, who all used “landscape interrupters” in striking and unusual ways.  How do these interrupters function?  How do they enhance a viewer’s attention and response to the scene?  How might we consider using foreground interrupters to make our own landscapes stand out from the crowd?

Leigh Culver is an art historian, teacher and painter.  She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and taught American Art for the University of Notre Dame’s Washington Program for over a decade.  Prior to teaching, she worked in the curatorial departments at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and in education at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  As a painter, she has won multiple watercolor awards in the Mid-Atlantic region and recently served as President of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists.  She taught advanced watercolor at The Art League School in Alexandria, VA, before turning to teaching “Painting through Art History” with online Zoom classes. www.leighculverart.com

You’ll be able to watch the class recording as many times as you would like for one year unless otherwise specified in the product description. If an instructor wishes their recordings to be available for less than a year, we defer to instructor preferences. There are no ongoing charges and your access will automatically end.
