Karen Sako – Snow Isn’t White An Introduction to Winter Light in Oil & Cold Wax (Online); Thursday, October 22 – 12:45 pm PT / 3:45 pm ET / 8:45 pm UK Time

Date: Thursday, October 22, 2026

Time: 12:45-1:45 pm Pacific time (3:45-4:45 pm Eastern time/8:45-9:45 pm UK time)

Level: All levels welcome

Medium: Oil & cold wax

Presentation Type: Demo

Snow is rarely just white. Look closely and you’ll discover soft violets, warm golds, cool blues, and unexpected color hidden throughout the winter landscape.

In this free one-hour demonstration, Karen Sako will create a small atmospheric winter landscape using oil and cold wax. Working from a simple reference and a limited palette, she’ll demonstrate how she simplifies the landscape into strong shapes, establishes a clear value structure, and uses subtle shifts of warm and cool color to capture the unique quality of winter light.

Using brushes, brayers, scraping tools, and expressive mark-making, Karen will show how texture, transparency, layering, and broken color can transform a simple winter scene into a painting that feels luminous, atmospheric, and full of life.

This demonstration offers a glimpse into Karen’s December Winter Light class, where students will explore these ideas more deeply while creating their own winter-inspired paintings and discovering just how colorful winter can be.

Participants are welcome to watch, take notes, or paint along using the optional supply list.
