How you begin a painting can shape everything that follows. In this demonstration, Patrick Lee explores how to establish a strong foundation by observing the arrangement of large shapes, simplifying what you see, and identifying the essential elements that first drew you to the subject.

But a good beginning is about more than getting things right. Patrick will share how he balances careful observation with flexibility, allowing a painting to develop organically rather than simply recording what is in front of him. Discover how a thoughtful start can open the door to creative interpretation and help transform observation into a more personal expression of the subject.

Patrick Lee grew up in Western Pennsylvania and attended Edinboro University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Painting with an Art History minor. Lee works primarily in oils, charcoal, and watercolor (gouache). His chosen subject matter generally ranges from figurative works and landscapes to still-life and interiors.

Lee has participated in many group and solo exhibitions, including Plein Air painting events like Plein Air Easton and Wayne Plein Air and have been an adjunct professor of art at Allegheny Community College for the past several years.

  • Express Register to access all live-over-Zoom events and recordings afterwards.
  • You must be logged in to Express Register.  You will be prompted to create an account to log in to if you don’t have one already.
  • There is one Zoom link for the entire festival so you can join any time.
  • You’ll receive an email each day of the festival with the line up for the day, the Zoom link (same link all day every day) and a link to the festival page for the recordings.
  • Recordings will be posted within 24 hours after the event. 
  • Festival recordings never expire, they become part of our Free Recordings Library about a month after the end of the festival.
  • After registering, you’ll find the link to the Festival Page with Zoom and recording links in your Online Classrooms.
