There is no subject more instinctively fascinating to us than the human face. I love to study and sketch sculptures on my travels, and snapped images of some favourites while I was in Rome this year.
In this workshop, we will work from my images of these gorgeous, sculpted faces. Giving us a beautiful starting point, they already contain expression and emotion, as captured by the sculptor and are ready to be translated into our own, painted versions.
Starting with sketching, I will show you a few key, anatomical points of the head/skull that I find useful to plot a course and define the structure behind facial features. Then we will work on painted studies using a simple, very limited palette. Subtle colours will allow us to focus mainly on form (but still play a little with warm and cool temperature shifts).
All levels are most welcome! Faces can be intimidating, but I will help you see that any subject is just made up of shapes. This experience will leave you with stronger skills for any kind of future portraiture work.
