Painting on a large scale is both ambitious and liberating. It breaks down inhibitions, loosens the hand, and opens up a different way of seeing and thinking. When you go big, everything expands — your brushstrokes, your paint application, your mindset.
Scale requires intention. In this class, Yana will guide you through her complete process for working large — from selecting and preparing your reference image all the way to a finished painting. All work will be at least 24 inches on the short side — think 24×30 and up.
We begin with planning. You’ll choose your reference image and work one-on-one with Yana to refine and adjust it so it translates beautifully at scale. Together you’ll decide on your and determine the dimensions that best suit your composition. Yana will use Photoshop to size your image to match your chosen surface exactly.
Next comes transfer. Using the grid method, you’ll map your composition onto your support with accuracy and confidence.
Then we paint. Yana will demonstrate her step-by-step approach to building a large-scale painting, and you’ll work alongside her, applying each stage to your own piece. By the end of the class, you’ll have the tools, the method, and the experience to continue working at scale on your own.
This class is for intermediate painters working in oil or acrylic. Students will need a full-size easel to accommodate the larger format.
