Color is more than what we observe – it is one of the artist’s most powerful creative tools. In this three-week workshop, students will learn to design color with intention, creating harmony, contrast, atmosphere, and a personal visual language. Through demonstrations and guided painting exercises, we will explore how color patterns can create stronger, more expressive paintings than simply describing individual objects.

Working in oil, acrylic, or gouache, students will learn to become their own art director—using observation as a starting point while embracing memory, invention, and artistic interpretation. The goal is to move beyond copying nature and develop the confidence to make purposeful color decisions that support a unique vision.

Week 1: Seeing Color as Pattern

  • Seeing interconnected color patterns instead of isolated shapes
  • Building harmony through an understanding of hue, value, and chroma
  • Creating intentional contrast to strengthen atmosphere and design
  • Moving beyond local color toward expressive color relationships

Week 2: Designing Color Rather Than Copying Nature

  • Simplifying and editing color patterns from observation
  • Creating mood through temperature, relationships, and color choices
  • Using memory and interpretation to transform what we see

Week 3: Becoming Your Own Art Director

  • Developing a personal color language
  • Balancing observation, memory, and invention
  • Designing color from the beginning of a painting through completion
  • Creating work that reflects personal vision and artistic voice

Suitable for painters working in oil, acrylic, or gouache.
