This three-part workshop takes participants through all phases of abstract painting using methods of additive and subtractive layering. These phases can be described roughly, as: 1) initial raw marks 2) staying with the process 3) careful editing to finish
Working simultaneously on multiple substrates keeps us from overthinking outcomes to stay present with the process. The main emphasis is on learning to combine line, mark, and form in layers, to create strong visual interest. Techniques include paint application using alternate tools, mark-making, color relationships, working with transparency and opacity, veiling, and integrating drawing materials with paint. Each session begins with a slideshow of contemporary art followed by instructor demos and guided exercises.

Born in Chicago in 1961, Zoë Cohen was strongly affected by the classic graphic influences of a mid-century urban environment. Everyday exposure to modern architecture, photography, painting, sculpture and minimalist 1960’s design made a deep impression. Zoë’s abstract painting springs from her lifelong fascination with mid-century modern art and design, Abstract Expressionism and The New York School painters. She continues to be inspired by contemporary artists of all kinds. History, art history, social history, illustration, literature, theater, music, dance, photography, and film all inform her work.
