Class Description

Snow is rarely just white. Look closely and you’ll discover soft violets, warm golds, cool blues, and unexpected color hidden throughout the winter landscape. In this free one-hour demonstration, Karen Sako will create a small atmospheric winter landscape using oil and cold wax. Working from a simple reference and a limited palette, she’ll demonstrate how she simplifies the landscape into strong shapes, establishes a clear value structure, and uses subtle shifts of warm and cool color to capture the unique quality of winter light. Using brushes, brayers, scraping tools, and expressive mark-making, Karen will show how texture, transparency, layering, and broken color can transform a simple winter scene into a painting that feels luminous, atmospheric, and full of life. This demonstration offers a glimpse into Karen’s December Winter Light class, where students will explore these ideas more deeply while creating their own winter-inspired paintings and discovering just how colorful winter can be. Participants are welcome to watch, take notes, or paint along using the optional supply list.
