In this engaging presentation, Debora will discuss why she is drawn to oil sticks for their rich pigment, direct mark-making, and ability to move fluidly between drawing and painting. Through images of recent floral works and selected demonstration footage, she will explore how oil sticks can be layered over an expressive ground to create depth, movement, and luminous color. Topics will include surface preparation, handling techniques, and how structure and gesture work together within bouquet compositions. This talk is designed to inspire artists who are curious about oil sticks or looking to expand their floral work into more painterly and contemporary territory.

  1. Lovely presentation Debra, thank you! Do I have it right that when you prepare your canvas you are mixing liquitex clear gesso with raw sienna oil paint? If it is oil paint then do you wait days or weeks for it to dry before beginning the painting? Or is the liquitex gesso mixed with raw Siena acrylic paint as the base for the oil stick painting? Thank you!
