Discover the expressive possibilities of R&F Pigment Sticks while creating vibrant abstract floral bouquets. In this workshop, artist Debora Stewart, Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, will guide students through her intuitive approach to building floral compositions using color, gesture, and layered mark-making.
Students will begin with quick color studies in pastel or paint to explore palette and composition. These studies will then be translated into small paintings using acrylic underpainting and oil sticks on textured surfaces. The workshop will focus on simplifying floral forms, developing strong compositional structure, and allowing expressive color and movement to guide the painting process.
Participants will learn techniques for working with pigment sticks, building layered surfaces, strengthening composition, and bringing a painting to a satisfying conclusion. Optional exercises using simple notan studies will help clarify light and dark structure in abstract compositions.
This workshop is ideal for artists interested in loosening their approach to florals and exploring a painterly, intuitive process.
All levels welcome. Experience with drawing or painting is helpful but not required.
