Join Anne Wolfer for a four-week exploration of the essential tools she uses to create depth, distance, and atmosphere in her landscape paintings.
Anne will share her methods for observing and translating the landscape, with a particular focus on atmospheric perspective, color, temperature, and value. You’ll explore how these elements work together to create a convincing sense of space and how subtle shifts can transform a painting.
Students will practice mixing accurate colors while learning to distinguish between local color – the inherent color of an object – and the ways that color changes with light, distance, and atmospheric conditions. Through Anne’s weekly demonstrations, discussions, and guided painting time, you’ll develop a stronger understanding of value relationships and how they contribute to depth and dimension.
This class is designed to help you see the landscape with greater awareness and give you practical methods for translating what you see into a cohesive, convincing painting.
Open to all levels and all mediums.

Anne earned her BA from the University of Utah before spending a decade in San Francisco working in educational publishing, all while maintaining a dedicated artistic practice. Living abroad in Vienna and Munich, surrounded by centuries of art and architecture, further fueled her artistic growth. Returning to Utah, she studied with several respected professional artists, further developing both her painting and her passion for teaching.
For the past ten years, Anne has been an influential visual arts educator at Rowland Hall, while also teaching private and group lessons in her Salt Lake City studio. Her contemporary painting style strikes a balance between dimensionality and abstraction, and she is known for her expressive use of color, light, and mark-making. Anne’s work is held in private collections across the U.S. and internationally, and she is proudly represented by 15th Street Gallery in Salt Lake City.
