In this three-week course Paul will be revealing how he renders the wild dynamic landscape around us. Paul’s inspiration is the Welsh back-country: a mosaic of bleak moor, rugged rock, temperate rainforest, and shattered coastline overseen by the tempestuous Welsh weather. This course will demonstrate the use of expressive mark-making using acrylic paint, graphite, charcoal and collage to render cloud, water and rock in a spontaneous abstract fashion, yet still producing something relatable. Paul will be explaining the application of these techniques with two demonstration paintings per class. Paul will also set (non-manditory) assignments to challenge the students. The course includes exclusive access to a message board/forum where Paul will be able to give advice and critique member’s work, alongside a few extra posts about his current projects and/or previous paintings and how they relate to the demonstrations or student’s queries.

Since he was a child, Paul Bailey has been fascinated by the varied wild, remote, and areas of Britain, be it moorland, mountain or coastal low-land. Inspired by this deep passion for the British landscape, Bailey fuses his memories, helped by sketches and photos, with vivid colors and dynamic brushstrokes, to produce sometimes ethereal interpretations of the diverse, subtle, and dramatic scenery within these great isles.

Almost completely self-taught, Paul learned through books, by visiting galleries and by viewing work by other artists. He enjoys a wide variety of art genres, from Turner to Rothko.

In Paul’s own approach to his art, he looks for the abstract forms in nature, breaking the complex down to more basic elements.
