A photograph is only the beginning. While cameras record the details of a scene, they can’t capture the feeling of standing in a place—the shifting light, the movement of the wind, or the emotional connection that drew you to it in the first place.
In this four-session online workshop, award-winning artist Sarah B. Hansen will show you how to use reference photos as inspiration rather than instruction. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, you’ll learn how to simplify complex scenes, strengthen composition, edit unnecessary details, and transform ordinary photographs into expressive, personal landscapes.
Together we’ll explore how to redesign a scene by adjusting values, color, light, and atmosphere to create paintings with greater impact and emotion. You’ll discover when to follow your reference, when to trust your instincts, and how to paint with confidence instead of copying what the camera sees. Some experience in painting and drawing is useful. Artist will demonstrate in acrylic.
