Leave perfection behind and discover the joy of painting loose, expressive landscapes with watercolor and ink. Through playful washes, bold splashes of color, and lively ink work, you’ll learn how to capture the spirit of a place rather than every detail.
Over four two-hour sessions, we’ll explore how to create dynamic watercolor foundations filled with movement and atmosphere and adding expressive ink lines that bring personality, contrast, and life to each painting. You’ll learn to embrace happy accidents, simplify complex scenes, and use ink to suggest rather than define.
Whether you’re new to ink or already love combining media, this class will help you loosen your style, trust the process, and create landscapes full of energy, light, and character.
Online posting of homework will allow Sarah to individually help each student. Demos will be done in watercolor. Some experience in painting is helpful.

Award-winning Northwest Watercolor Society Signature member, artist, and instructor, Sarah B. Hansen has been painting for over 30 years. A self-taught painter, Sarah began by painting traditional transparent watercolor on paper, primarily portraits. By recently converting into a landscape artist, Sarah has found in the combination of her love of nature and gestural paint application, an open door into limitless possibilities of expression. Born and raised in Southwestern Colorado, Sarah moved to Oregon in 1987, working as a commercial and residential designer in Portland. Now, Sarah can be found creating acrylic and watercolor landscapes from her studio in Bend, Oregon. Her collectors range regionally and worldwide, both in residential homes and hospitality facilities, such as Kaiser Permanente, Sunriver Resort, and Cascade Medical Imaging. She teaches workshops both regionally and abroad. Member American Women Artists, NWWS, Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Artists.
