Color and paint handling are always intertwined. A color can feel loud or quiet, solid or airy, sharp or atmospheric depending not only on the color itself, but on how the paint is applied.
Scumbling, dry brushing, scraping and smearing paint have very different impacts on appearance than fluid juicy strokes, thick dabs or palette knife slabs.
The aim of this workshop is to understand the way our paint application affects our color. We’ll learn to enhance or diminish chroma, alter its temperature, make it vibrate or be still – all through how we put paint on our canvases. And, by working with limited palettes, we’ll create satisfying and unified color compositions.
Each week, we’ll explore a different limited palette and paint application method and use it to make small still life paintings.
Each painter will also work on a larger multi-week painting in the genre of their choice. Allowing these works to dry between classes will let us build complex surfaces and thoughtful color compositions over the course of the four-week session.
The classes will consist of clear, in-depth demos and low-stress, positive critiques. Ingrid encourages questions and discussion during class time and strives to make online classes as lively and interactive as in person workshops.
You will have access to the recordings and message board for this class for three months after the end of the class.
