The monotype, often referred to as the painterly print, is a responsive medium that is especially suited for experimenting with chance and immediacy. Monotypes are also really good at creating a range of value; without any prior experience one can quickly create a beautiful range of tones,/ value and a sense of glowing light that can be challenging to achieve in other mediums.

In this workshop, Nanette will explore the intrinsic value of monotypes through a range of techniques inspired by the monochromatic work of Degas. Additionally we will discuss the history of monotypes to illustrate how the practice of making monotypes can help one find unimagined directions, floating between the worlds of intention and incident.

This workshop will support either working with a printmaking press using printmaking ink or working without a press using printmaking ink on Gel Plates. The outcomes will be different, but similar. No prior experience is necessary.

Please note that students will work from their own photo or inspiration that may be adapted to the assignments. Additionally, both representational and non-representational approaches will be supported.

Nanette Wallace’s gestural artwork is created as an emotional response to the world around her. She feels deeply connected to bodies of water, the play of light, and the power of art and nature to heal and lift her up. She is both a painter and printmaker; her monotypes lean heavily into the painterly realm.

In Nanette’s monotype process, the ghost is the link between successive images that either extend the previous idea or embrace a new train of thought. The “ghost” being ink left on the plate from a previous monotype print. Simply put, the ghost conjures, and she responds to it, through a process of iteration. Her tools are crude and imprecise, including brayers, q-tips and her finger wrapped in a cotton cloth which add to the element of surprise. While she often has specific intentions when she starts making her work, she finds the monotype process vital for working in the moment, allowing her to respond to what emerges and intuitively follow the image as it reveals itself to her.
