In this course, we look closely at the three pastel drawings by Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) in London’s National Gallery. Made in the late 1880s and 1890s, these works beautifully illustrate his breadth of approach. Laura will demonstrate using soft pastels but you are welcome to use any coloured drawing or painting material you like. Much of the discussion will be about colour and compositional choices, which is equally applicable to painting. Laura is particularly fond of and familiar with these works and will encourage slow looking. The energy, invention and atmosphere of them is truly dazzling and inspiring.
Materials: Soft pastels on pastel paper or tracing paper, alternatively, water-based paint or any coloured drawing material
