Marking the centenary of Mary Cassatt’s death, major exhibitions in Paris, Washington, and Chicago are reconsidering this pioneering American artist. Cassatt is often remembered for her tender paintings of mothers and children, but her work presents a far more complex and experimental vision of modern life. An independent American artist working in Paris, Cassatt used unusual cropping, flattened space, pattern, gesture, and vivid color to make women’s experiences central to Impressionism.

In this two-part class, we will combine biography, close looking, and practical studio application. We will explore Cassatt’s paintings, pastels, and Japanese-inspired prints, examining how she created drama through intimacy, attention, and everyday gestures. Students will develop an original composition inspired by Cassatt, considering how private rituals and relationships can become ambitious subjects for contemporary painting.
