The monotype process is a responsive, immediate, and intuitive way to make original art printed on paper, not to mention it’s super fun!

Whether you are just getting started or are more experienced at making monotypes, this workshop will provide inspiration and techniques to help build a foundation for working intuitively while embracing risk taking in a way that can benefit your studio practice. While monotypes naturally lend themselves to simplification and quick gestural work, they are also brilliant for creating subtle effects and soft tonal ranges that are unique to the medium. I find that monotypes serve me best when I allow them to take on a life of their own, where unintended results become desired outcomes.

While I will primarily be making monotypes with a press using printmaking ink, most techniques can be supported and adapted to students working without a press using Gelli Plates or other hand printing methods you may be familiar with.

Workshop will include:
-Presentation of monotype related artists, history and inspiration
-Exploring monotypes unique qualities for mark making, shading and creating a sense
of glowing light
-Mixing and Layering ink with viscosity techniques
-Creating work using single and multiple passes
-Embracing experimentation and risk taking to develop and expand upon your initial
concept
-Letting go: responding to the nuance of the ghost to lead you into new directions

Please note that students will work from their own photo or inspiration. Additionally, I will support both representational and non-representational approaches to the
medium/workshop.
