Supply List

In this dynamic 4-week class inspired by the works of Nicolas de Stael, award-winning painter Michael Weller will guide painters in exploring a more abstract approach to working from life. Nicolas de Stael’s work is particularly intriguing, noted for starting with dark, thick applications of paint and evolving into brighter, thinner compositions.

This class is ideal for painters who are interested in simplifying their practice while incorporating abstract elements. Sessions will primarily focus on hands-on painting, supported by demonstrations and group discussions.

The structure of the four-week workshop is as follows:

  • Week 1: Reproducing a painting by Nicolas de Stael to understand his approach and techniques.
  • Week 2: Creating a rendering from life, using a still life setup at home as the subject.
  • Week 3: Painting from life again but experimenting with altered color schemes, such as turning orange into blue or yellow into red, to see how these changes impact the piece.
  • Week 4: Working from personal drawings and reimagining the colors to create unique compositions.

Michael Weller invites artists to push their boundaries, experiment with color, and embrace a fresh perspective in their work.
