In this four-week workshop, Michael Weller will guide students in a dynamic exploration of color, expressive line and bold mark-making, using Matisse and the Fauves as the starting point. Michael will also share the practical strategies he relies on to manage and develop a painting — from first marks to final resolution.

The course is inspired by a pivotal moment in Michael’s own artistic journey. After seeing the Matisse and Picassoexhibition at Tate Modern, he recognised how profoundly Matisse’s passion for form and colour had shaped many of the painters he admired. That poetic balance — capturing the essence of a room or object while still leaving space for imagination — continues to influence his work today.

Throughout the workshop, students will be encouraged to find their own visual language. The goal isn’t to imitate Matisse or the instructor, but to strengthen each artist’s individual voice while exploring color in a playful and liberating way.
