What can colour do for a portrait? What happens when colour describes more than what we see? In this five-week course, we’ll explore how artists have used colour to give a portrait atmosphere, personality and emotional force.
Each week brings two contrasting artists into conversation, with each pairing drawn from a different period in art history. We’ll explore approaches to colour in Renaissance portraiture, compare how two nineteenth-century portrait painters used colour theory, and contrast Matisse’s use of colour as pattern and design with the charged, psychological colour of Expressionism.
Featured artists include Titian, Artemesia Gentileschi, Modigliani and Soutine and more. Looking closely at a pair gives us a practical question to bring to our current work: What would happen if I built this portrait through decorative colour? What if I chose colours for the feeling they create instead?
Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, students will try specific approaches in their own portraits, then decide which possibilities they want to carry into their practice. The artist pairings offer a way to look, experiment and make discoveries, rather than a style to copy. Students will leave with a richer colour vocabulary and more confidence in making colour choices that serve the portrait they want to paint.
