“Dufy is pleasure!” So said Gertrude Stein about the French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy (1877 – 1953). His effervescent, joyous paintings radiate colour and light. He was, however, more radical and visually avant-guard than he is often given credit for. We take a deep dive into the way he looked at the world and used colour and calligraphic mark-making to communicate his vision.
His interiors are some of his most beloved works. The blue sky seen through windows and the richness of the subject are ideally suited to his uplifting, lyrical style.
In this class, we will take inspiration from his inventive approach to interiors. We will use acrylic or gouache to interpret his gorgeous paintings.
Guided by our tutor Laura Smith, you will be encouraged to experiment with some different drawing and painting languages. You can use whichever paints you like. Laura will show you how to build up layers of water-based paint with acrylic or gouache to create richly worked, unique pictures.
Dufy said, “What I wish to show when I paint is the way I see things with my eyes and in my heart.” Let yourself be lifted up by his exuberance and delight.
This class is designed for artists of all levels.
Materials: Paper that can take washes such as watercolour paper or thick cartridge. Gouache or acrylic but you can use any materials you like.
