Contrast is what gives a painting its energy and staying power. Painters can work with contrasts of colour, temperature, value, form, pigment transparency, brushwork, detail and simplification, shape, scale, and edge variety… The options are nearly endless and learning to use them deliberately can transform the strength of your work.
In this online workshop, we’ll focus on one type of contrast each week, isolating it from the many competing decisions that every painting demands. By narrowing our attention, we can explore each contrast more deeply and push it further than we might otherwise dare.
Through structured exercises, you’ll test the limits of each contrast method and likely discover that those limits extend far beyond what you assumed.
The goal is to gain clarity about some of the vast number of practical tools that you can apply, with intention, to create more compelling paintings.
We’ll work from both still life and photographic references. You may choose photos from any genre you prefer. Ingrid will demonstrate using landscape and figurative references, alongside a weekly still life that anchors each session.
