Abstraction is the process of coding and decoding through color, shape, line, and texture. These elements are combined, arranged, and distilled to form visual codes. To better understand abstraction, we will focus on these basic elements as systems of meaning. Throughout the course, we will explore arrangements, texture and color relationships, and post-digital approaches to abstraction.

In each session, we will examine the work of two artists from different cultural backgrounds who engage with the same pictorial language and/or similar subjects. This approach aims to introduce and investigate abstraction on a global scale, beyond traditional “isms.” Selected artworks and subjects will reveal surprising resemblances and significant differences.
