Experience the art of woodcut printmaking in action with artist and woodcut printmaker, Charles Spitzack. During this hands-on presentation, Charles will demonstrate the complete process of creating a multi-layered woodcut print, from beginning to end. You’ll learn a straightforward registration technique and gain insight into how you can easily hand-pull prints from the comfort of your own home. Woodcut printmaking has been a powerful method for producing multiple copies of an image or text for centuries. and in this session, you’ll discover why this timeless art form continues to captivate artists and printmakers today. Come see how this traditional craft is used to create vibrant, multi-layered prints full of depth and color!

About the Instructor:
Charles Spitzack was born in 1987 in Minnesota and raised in the Twin Cities. He fell in love with print at Highpoint Center for Printmaking while attending Perpich Arts High School in Minneapolis, and continued his studies at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, receiving a BFA in 2010. His work is represented by Davidson Galleries, published by Pomegranate Communications, and can be found in the Microsoft Art Collection, Mary Alice Cooley Collection, and the Southern Graphics Printmaking Archive. He has shown at the Tacoma Art Museum, the Bellevue Art Museum, Cascadia Art Museum, and the Museum of Northwest Art. In 2024 he won the “Kobaien Prize” at the International Mokuhanga (Japanese Woodblock) Conference in Echizen Japan. He currently balances life between working as a carpenter, creating art, teaching art, and serving as Board President for Seattle Print Arts, a Seattle-based arts non-profit focusing on printmaking.

  1. Thank you for this introductory demo during the Spring Fling. I appreciate the opportunity to get to know your teaching style. You conveyed a lot of information concisely and very efficiently in a short period. I also loved seeing the Arts and Crafts examples you shared (my favorite)!
