Cynthia Armstrong – Capturing the San Juan Islands in Watercolor Work-Along
Date recorded: Friday, November 3, 2023
Working with a limited palette in this fun watercolor paint-along, artist Cynthia Armstrong will play with two key elements that contribute to watercolor success – paint consistency and timing. The iconic Pacific Northwest San Juan Islands provide the perfect subject for cementing an understanding of watercolor techniques while exploring a simple landscape composition.

Bernadette,
So glad you enjoyed the class. I respectfully disagree with you about the far distant hills. I like their soft, lighter value. It works! Nicely done!!!!
This was so helpful. The written “plan” before you started was extremely useful–I wish every online art class would have that. The tips about “palette hygiene” were hilarious and useful both. Great class.
A very enjoyable class. Thank you. I had none of the recommended colors, no tape and poor quality paper, but had fun nonetheless! The far land is too pale, and the water too grey. I will try to remove the annoying blue spot low in the sky . . .
Thank you for the free lesson! Here’s my painting. It was fun to make. I wish I had not placed the small island in the very middle, though. The mountains on the right have too much of the sky coming through, I think.

Thank you Cynthia. I loved having a finished piece in an hour! I will watch the recording and do a second version. 🙂
What a well organized, good teacher…and beautiful art resulted. Thank you!
