Learn to paint beautiful, expressive portraits in charcoal and oil paint! In this class, we will find our way to achieving freedom and energy in our paintings by first approaching our subject in charcoal.
In the first half of the class, students will learn the basics of drawing with a fun, painterly approach. By using a variety of charcoal materials and tools like paint brushes, blending stumps, and rags, you will learn to create beautiful portraits and improve your drawing skills. Because this painterly charcoal technique translates so readily to oil painting, your drawing practice will directly inform and improve your painting.
Through your painterly charcoal drawing practice, you will learn to tackle your oil paintings with organization and conviction – key ingredients for relaxed, confident painting.
The second half of the class will transition to working with oil paint. We will work through crucial skills like drawing with paint, using color efficiently, designing a simple value plan, applying interesting paint textures, and describing form using edges and contrast.
Catherine balances her academic art training with an expressive and intuitive approach to painting. She will guide you through this exciting and challenging topic with frequent demonstrations, detailed instruction, and generous feedback. Each class session will build on the previous lesson. This class is ideal for painters who want to improve their draftsmanship, or for beginners who want to build a foundation in drawing.
