Abstraction may seem easy to the casual observer, yet presents complex challenges for the painter. This course investigates the paradox that within limitation lies great freedom. Narrowing focus can expand our creativity. Each session presents three specific prompts related to color and composition including value studies, transparent and opaque paint, limited palette, color schemes, positive and negative space, line, form, scale, common compositional formats and working from observation.
Each week begins with a slideshow of contemporary art followed by instructor demos and guided exercises. Using a variety of tools and techniques we practice intuitive decision making within finite parameters to help clarify our essential expression.
Born in Chicago in 1961, Zoë Cohen was strongly affected by the classic graphic influences of a mid-century urban environment. Everyday exposure to modern architecture, photography, painting, sculpture and minimalist 1960’s design made a deep impression. Zoë’s abstract painting springs from her lifelong fascination with mid-century modern art and design, Abstract Expressionism and The New York School painters. She continues to be inspired by contemporary artists of all kinds. History, art history, social history, illustration, literature, theater, music, dance, photography, and film all inform her work. www.zcohenstudio.com
