In this dynamic three-week course, we’ll dive deep into exploring of a single floral subject. We will approach it from two distinct angles: collage and painting.
Starting with the art of selecting the right reference, you’ll learn how to simplify, edit, and reimagine your photo to create an impactful composition. Once we have solidified your custom reference, we’ll first translate it into a paper collage. Finally, we will delve into a confident alla prima painting – done in one sitting.
Week 1: Composition & Reference Selection
We will review your photo references and discuss how to build a strong impactful composition with simplified shapes. I strongly suggest to use one of your own photos. However, my own references will be provided just in case.
Less is more: one or maximum two blooms will be our focus as we learn to amplify their visual power. Think Georgia O’Keefe!
Week 2: Collage
With our compositions locked in, we’ll translate them into paper collages. You will learn two methods for prepping papers. Let’s keep the format small and manageable. However, we will take about how to make a large collage.
Embrace imperfection—collage rewards experimentation!
Week 3: Alla Prima Painting
Now that we’ve done the groundwork, it’s time to paint—boldly and directly. Working alla prima (in one sitting), you’ll lay down luscious, confident brushstrokes using big brushes and a generous piles of paint.
This course is about freedom, expression, and getting comfortable with experimentation.
All levels welcome. Come ready to play, explore, and create!
