In this workshop we will paint flowers from a photo reference in a direct alla prima style. A large format is greatly encouraged. We will discuss historical methods of painting florals from direct observation and compare them to modern approaches, as well as creating a strong composition, finding the value scale, color mixing and housekeeping of the palette. We will emphasize the freshness of approach and laying in luscious strokes to create botanicals.
Yana will demonstrate the whole process from start to finish, encouraging the students to first watch and then follow along. Topics covered will be impasto techniques, confidence of application and training your eye to see nuances of color and value. Going beyond the technical, we will discuss the feeling of joy and movement in the painting, amplifying the pleasure of working with flowers.
