Discover ways to make your acrylic painting look like Old Masters oil paintings in this six-week class with Wayne Jiang. In this course we will work on 4 styles of layering and glazing techniques:

  • One tone underpainting layering technique;
  • Complementary colors layering technique;
  • Baroque masters’ layering technique;
  • Maxfield Parrish layering technique.

Through a mixture of demos, step-by-step instruction of advanced techniques, slideshow presentations, and painting exercises, you will learn:

  • How to combine transparent and opaque layers of paint;
  • How to use subtle glazes to create luminous and subtle colors;
  • Understand what color combination and sequence to use for which layering technique.

In addition, you will gain knowledge and skills in the following areas: brushstrokes, color theory, painting details, lighting, and rendering.

In this online course, we will be working on 4 paintings. Subject matters will include portraits, landscapes, and still life using photo references for all painting demos. Wayne will post photo references to the class feed prior to each class. You may use your own similar photo reference for your painting.

Wayne Jiang is a Portland-based realist acrylic painter. Combining the aesthetic of 17th century Baroque paintings and the composition of modern documentary photography, his works have been described as the contemporary interpretations of Vermeer and Hopper. His work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Morris Graves Museum of Art, Triton Museum, Crocker Museum, Lan Su Chinese Garden, History San José, and Guardino Gallery.As an art educator, Wayne specializes in teaching acrylic both in person and online. He has 3 decades of experience working with acrylic and 13 years teaching the medium. His students are artists with diverse skill levels: from someone who has never painted to professional artists who want to refine their acrylic technique or learn a new medium. Wayne’s deep interest in art history is incorporated in both his paintings and how he teaches.
