As the old saying goes, one must stop and smell the roses to gain an appreciation of life. We can apply this philosophy to art by painting common everyday objects in simple, elegant, and thoughtful ways. In this workshop we will cover:

  • Mixing, calibrating, and applying colors in realistic still life paintings,
  • Blending and layering acrylic techniques specific to painting realistic still life,
  • Simplifying and rearranging objects to create painting compositions with more thought-provoking narratives,
  • How to balance hard and soft edges effectively,
  • How to paint details in light and shadow to make your still life come alive.

We will produce 2 paintings in this class. You can create paintings using the same references as Wayne’s demo or create paintings from your own references. More advanced students are encouraged to create paintings using their own reference.

This class will include painting demos, student work feedback sessions, slideshow presentations, and eye training exercises. These combinations of activities are designed to help refine your acrylic painting techniques and observation skills.

Wayne Jiang is a Portland-based realist acrylic painter. Combining the aesthetic of 17th century Baroque paintings and the composition of modern documentary photography, his works have been described as the contemporary interpretations of Vermeer and Hopper. His work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Morris Graves Museum of Art, Triton Museum, Crocker Museum, Lan Su Chinese Garden, Portland Art Museum Sales and Rental Gallery, and Guardino Gallery. As an art educator, Wayne specializes in teaching acrylic both in person and online. He has 3 decades of experience working with acrylic and 15 years teaching the medium. His students are artists with diverse skill levels: from someone who has never painted to professional artists who want to refine their acrylic technique or learn a new medium. Wayne’s deep interest in art history is incorporated in both his paintings and how he teaches.
