Flowers continue to be a favorite subject for painters, and many believe that seeing the beauty in a flower can awaken the spirit. How do you translate these fleeting, ethereal forms into paint?

Working alla prima, or with the intent of finishing a painting in one sitting, is one way. In this workshop, we will explore what it means to paint alla prima and how to work with urgency, not haste. We will cover these topics and more as they relate to painting flowers:

• Drawing as an initial and ongoing response
• Value as structure
• Color mixing and unity
• Building interesting paint surfaces

Each class will include discussion and live and/or recorded demonstrations of specific topics. Students are encouraged to make their own individual arrangements and work from life in their own studios in between classes. Participants can post work in the online group area for feedback from Tracy and other class participants.

Tracy Everly is an award-winning painter. Her fierce determination and love of painting guided her education, including study with painters and classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Her teaching objective is to create a positive environment, empowering students to take risks, ask questions and pursue their own individual artistic path. Her method involves sharing some aspects of her own artistic process, but also aiming to help students build and follow their own artistic practice.
